Mombasa with its blend of ancient and modem buildings is claimed to be the oldest town in East Africa. A comprehensive tour of the island will include the Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in 1593, guarding the entrance to the old Harbor. It still stands today as a museum holding a fascinating collection of historic coastal artifacts. The tour further takes you to the old Arab town with its maze of narrow twisting alleys, displaying the beautifully carved doors, goldsmiths and curio shops, Hindu temple and finally, the Akamba Handicraft Co-operative, where over 1900 members produce a great variety of every reasonably priced wood carving. Before returning to your hotel, a drive to the Bazaar for a short shopping expedition.
